How much does it cost to send a greeting card to Mars?

2015.12.1
  • A 5 years old boy in England named Oliver Giddings is a huge fan of the outer space. He is obsessed with everything about it. He dreams to become an astronaut when he grew up. Christmas is coming and Oliver suddenly got an idea; He wish to send a Christmas card to Mars, but the problem was, he didn’t know how much it would cost, so Oliver decided to write the British Royal Mail a letter asking about the postal fee if he is sending a Christmas card to Mars. The question surprised the Royal Mail that they had to turn to NASA for answer. At the end, NASA came up with a postal fee of about 11,602 Pounds (around $18,000). Royal Mail replied to Oliver and informed him the fee of sending a card to Mars, they also explained in detail the reason for such high price. Sending a card to Mars will need a spacecraft, the fuel is costly and the storage cost is high due to the limited space of the spacecraft. Although Oliver wasn’t able to achieve his wish at the end, he was very contented and thankful to have received a reply from the Royal Mail. He then wrote a thank you letter to both the Royal Mail and NASA for their detailed explanation.
